AoU Iron Man Repaint
Don't get me wrong, I like MCU Tony Stark okay. He's become the Wolverine/Raphael (anti-hero team member who gets too much focus lately but shouldn't ever really be the leader). He is likable enough for the movies, but Civil War was the first big comic event that I read. Unfortunately, since reading it, I have had nothing but contempt for comic-universe Tony Stark. After that, I swore I'd never buy an Iron Man action figure, other than the super-cheap 3.75" movie-universe Tony to round out my Avengers-shelf at work (and stuck him in the back). I figure since it isn't comics-Tony that I get a pass.
Yet, since I am swapping my original film Thor Hot Toys figure for the Age of Ultron Thor figure (to match my costume), I had a blank spot on my 12" figure shelf and didn't want to be tempted to order some other multiple-hundred dollar figure just to fill that space for a few weeks. (side note, I'm super impatient and surprised I haven't done this). That shelf is strictly Marvel movie people, with Star Lord, Black Widow, Cap, and Thor. I needed that pop of red that Thor's cape has been providing!
Walking through Target a few weeks back, I saw the 12" Iron Man that accompanies Age of Ultron. Not the basic 4-joint barbie boyfriend, but the one that has a button to light up the reactor and interact with the Hulkbuster/Veronica suit. Upon close inspection, I saw that all of the structural sculpted elements were there, it was only a shotty paint job and lack of joints that was keeping this toy in the $20 range. But, at the time, I didn't need or want Iron Man. Yet, this weekend, I saw it again and thought of the blank space on my shelf that was eating at my heart. I knew I had enough paints to transform this thing, and if I could just keep him in a simple pose, this could really work!
So, since Sunday: bought it, filled in some of the holes and built up the neck by applying and carving hot glue, gave a base of white primer, painted all over red metallic, saw the areas that would need to be covered up with battle damage (glue didn't sand down to smooth...duh) and added some I saw from the movie, then studied the Hot Toys promo shots for their Mark XLIII figure to see color breaks, painted on silver and gold metallic spray paint with a bruch, used black acrylic to define the cracks and add the damage, then hit some sharp corners with a fine-point pen. Can't believe how good this thing turned out! Below are process shots. Really showed me that I don't have to spend as much cash if I'm willing to put in time to transform a base structure into something more detailed and refined.
